China Mobile International has acquired a plot in Frankfurt am Main, in order to develop a new Data Centre, named FRA1. Existing facilities will be demolished and Royal HaskoningDHV was responsible for the design with multiple disciplines.
The new building is a stand-alone 3 storey datacentre building with dedicated utility connections.
The architecture of the building and its form and materialization reflect the modern and high-tech nature. The main architectural characteristics are:
- Form Follows Function
- Standardization and repetition of building elements
- Modern building elements provided with bright (metallic) coatings
- Sustainable materials
Three main components determine the look and feel of the facade. An abstract metal grill covered dark plinth hides all technical openings and doors to steer the attention to the glass entrance which terminates the plinth with a smooth line. This line is further emphasized by the metal vertical elements which cover the closed parts of the facade. The glass penthouse like office floating above the solid metal façade finishes the composition and provides as such an ideal and secure overview from within outside.
