Indonesia-based, PT Sinar Mas Agro Resources and Technology TBK (PT Smart TBK) one of Indonesia’s largest publically-listed integrated palm-based consumer companies, has appointed Royal HaskoningDHV to support in the construction of a new Biodiesel plant in Bekasi, West-Java.

Royal HaskoningDHV will be responsible for the design, project management, tender, quantity surveying and construction management services for the new greenfield plant which will be built on the site of Smart TBK’s existing palm oil refinery operations in Marunda Center Industrial Estate. The 3-hectare site will accommodate processing plants for Biodiesel, pre-treatment and crude glycerine refining.

A multi-disciplinary team of architecture, engineering and modelling experts from Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia and India – lead by the Royal Haskoning DHV’s Jakarta office – will be involved in delivery of the project. This marks the second Biodiesel plant project that the team will be delivering for PT Smart TBK; the first is being developed in Indonesia’s South Kalimantan region.

The work itself requires concrete foundation and steel upper structure designs for the processing plants which in turn will be piping chemicals across the site’s vast infrastructure of pump buildings and tank farms.

Essentially a chemical refinery plant, the installation will handle  chemical catalysts (such as hydrochloric acid, sodium and nitrogen) and reactants (methanol) which after processing can become
intermediate, waste or finished products including Biodiesel, crude glycerine and refined bleached deodorized palm oil for example.

It is this area specifically that will form the majority of Royal HaskoningDHV’s scope of work. Work will commence with the design of the plant’s foundations including the concrete works and, external works (i.e. roads, gutters, aprons, etc) before progressing onto the steel structures, on-site buildings, pipe bridges and racks.
