The Project

Royal HaskoningDHV global mining consultants provide ongoing mining services advice under a formal Mining Technical Consultant Framework to Nigeria-based investment company Africa Finance Corporation (AFC). The framework requires Royal HaskoningDHV to provide periodic reviews on various mining projects considered by AFC to be potential investment opportunities, supporting AFC’s technical team with the international project experience of Royal HaskoningDHV. The Framework has been ongoing for over three years, with team members providing advice since 2013.

The Solution

The framework has included the review of numerous commodities (gold, iron ore, base metals, copper, diamonds, potash, phosphate) across the African continent including Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Sierra Leone, Zambia, DRC, Senegal, Mali and Lesotho. Commonly the reviews involve a desktop assessment of technical reports (stage 1) and additionally we have also provided on-site expertise in Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire and DRC as part of detailed reviews for more advanced investment opportunities (stage 2).

The Outcome

Following a review of available information AFC is provided with a concise report for each project. The reports include Royal Haskoning’s technical opinion and conclusions on key aspects of the project for AFC’s consideration. This includes a “go/no go” recommendation on whether the opportunity should be pursued further. Royal Haskoning leaves AFC with an enhanced technical and potential risks understanding of each opportunity in order to make informed investment decisions.

As a result of this relationship AFC requested Royal HaskoningDHV (February, 2016) to compile an Africa Mining Strategy Report in order to identify the most promising metals/minerals countries and projects which should form the focus of AFC’s investment opportunities over the coming year. In the prolonged commodity market downturn, Royal HaskoningDHV provided AFC with a summary of global market trends and realistic targets for investment within the African mining sector.
