With the Netherlands currently holding the EU Presidency, the European delegation to China was led by the Dutch team which consisted of Royal HaskoningDHV, alongside partners from the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, the Delft University of Technology and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research.
The seminar delved into the practical and theoretical domains, looking into the future of smart traffic network systems and road safety from a conceptual, technical and functional point of view. Having recently been involved in the first European trial of semi self-driving cars in the Netherlands, Royal HaskoningDHV was able to share its knowledge and expertise in the rapidly evolving field of self-driving cars, looking into the challenges and opportunities that this will bring, both in the short and long term.
Connected future of transportation
The seminar was bolstered by research from the Delft University of Technology and TNO Delft, illustrating how the connected future of transportation demands an integrated approach, looking into the entire ecosystem of traffic management to maximize road safety and enhance capacity.
Evert Klem, Strategic Advisor in Mobility and Traffic Management, represented Royal HaskoningDHV at the seminar. He said: “This seminar in China was a good platform to allow Royal HaskoningDHV, together with its partners, to showcase the Dutch expertise in the field of self-driving cars and intelligent transport systems.”
Ecosystem of traffic management
He added, “Too often we see that the focus is on either the vehicle or the infrastructure. At Royal HaskoningDHV, we believe that we need to go further and look at the complete ecosystem of traffic management. This includes research into human behaviour and how we interact with traffic. The multi-modal transport network of the future demands both smart and sustainable mobility and it is this integrated approach to traffic management, backed up by our track record in delivering efficient traffic management systems and solutions worldwide, that we are bringing to our clients.”
