Royal HaskoningDHV is pleased to announce that it has won a contract to design a Nereda® granular activated sludge system for the upgrade of the Winchburgh Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW). The contract has been awarded to meet tighter regulatory standards and provide increased capacity at the plant to accommodate the projected population increase. It is the second plant to incorporate this technology in Scotland, following on from a successful implementation at Inverurie WwTW.
Winchburgh WwTW is a treatment facility in West Lothian, Scotland. The village itself is approximately 10 miles (16 km) west of the city of Edinburgh. Scottish Water has selected ESD (Efficient Service Delivery) as its delivery partner, principal designer and contractor. Royal HaskoningDHV takes the role of process designer. The main driver for the upgrade is to improve the site’s capacity and comply with new regulatory standards. The projected PE catchment growth of the town by 2032 is 16,389, up from 3,300 PE. A new Nereda plant will be built on a site adjacent to the existing plant.
Meeting tightening consents
Winchburgh is currently a conventionally designed WwTW. The site discharges into a small water course, the Niddry Burn. Due to an increase in flows being treated, it is anticipated that SEPA will significantly tighten the current discharge consent. The solution for Winchburgh WwTW is a Nereda granular activated sludge process, with cloth filters downstream of the Nereda facility. The new works will incorporate a 450 m³ inlet buffer, three 780m³ Nereda reactors and two sludge buffer tanks. The site will be a new build and the project will commence on site in Summer 2021.
Proven and award-winning
Barry Oliver, Regional Sales Director, EMEA at Royal HaskoningDHV, commented: “This latest contract win strengthens our presence in Scotland and the UK as a whole. We’ve worked with ESD before and the partnership has been a productive one. Scottish Water was one of the early adopters, via pilot schemes that established the Nereda technology’s viability and efficiency. It is now a proven and award-winning game-changer in the wastewater treatment market, and we hope to build on this success with future Scottish Water projects”.
Royal HaskoningDHV's award-winning Nereda wastewater treatment solution is already being applied on six continents for municipal and industrial water. With over 86 Nereda projects awarded and completed or being delivered across the world, Nereda technology is a great example of sustainable wastewater treatment, providing industry leading standards of treated water with compact, lower power usage and little or no additional chemical use, using patented granular sludge technology.
