Royal HaskoningDHV’s Wash Tide Gauge project has been shortlisted for an Institute of Civil Engineers East of England award, recognising the technical excellence and innovative thinking that were the cornerstones of the scheme.

Commissioned by the Environment Agency and completed in June 2015, the new tide gauge forms part of the UK’s National Tide Gauge Network. Throughout the planning and construction of the project, the team, led by Royal HaskoningDHV, had to employ some serious lateral thinking to overcome significant challenges not least of which was the proximity of the site to an RAF bombing range and its position within an area of enormous environmental importance.

Project manager, Patrick Woods, said: “The whole team is thrilled to have been shortlisted for such a prestigious award. The project had some major challenges for us but we thrive on finding innovative, cost effective ways around such issues and I’m delighted that the hard work of the team in the planning and construction of the tide gauge has been recognised as an example of best practice by the ICE.

“The gap in the UK’s tide gauge network has long been acknowledged but through the excellence born of our experience and the innovations we introduced we have been able to plug the gap in the network and our gauge is now providing vital and accurate data which will better inform forecasting and planning decisions.”

Several innovative techniques were employed throughout the project such as shifting the focus to modular offshore construction, using alternative scour protection and optimising power usage. Attention was also paid to building in capacity for future upgrades ensuring the new gauge will continue to function effectively and efficiently as part of the network for at least the next 60 years.

Projects shortlisted for the Technical Excellence and Innovation award will be assessed on their ability to use challenges as the catalyst towards originality and excellence throughout the design and implementation of the project.

The awards ceremony will take place on Thursday 15 September at the British Racing School, Newmarket
