Fitwel 2-star certification has been awarded to Royal HaskoningDHV’s Contact Amsterdam building showcasing our leading position in healthy work environments. Employee wellbeing played a key role in selecting this location for our new office in 2017 and we are pleased to introduce further enhancement through the Fitwel certification process. With its optimised healthy working environment, our sustainable office in Amsterdam contributes to ‘enhancing society together’.
A great workplace adds value for people and business across many dimensions. The effects of healthy buildings and work environments are scientifically proven, with data showing their positive contribution to employee performance. Certification provides a useful framework for organisations seeking to evaluate and improve existing workplaces.
Fitwel is a certification method that focuses on health and wellbeing of building users, guests and employees. The certification is based on scientific research and has 12 sections: location, building access, outdoor spaces, entrances and ground floor, stairs, indoor environment, workspaces, shared spaces, water supply, prepared food areas, vending machines and snack bars, and emergency preparedness.
How to improve an already ‘healthy’ building
The wellbeing of employees has been an ambition and priority for the Amsterdam office since it was opened in 2017. Through the Fitwel certification process, we have been able to raise the working experience to a higher level with minor adjustments to the original design. Changes implemented included: provision of fruit during the day; replacing traditional vending for healthy snacks; establishment of an organic fruit and vegetables garden providing produce for healthy lunch dishes. Alongside good nutrition, colleagues are encouraged to be active during breaks through information provided on amenities and walking trails in the area. In addition, a strict tobacco-free policy has been introduced for the building.
About the Royal HaskoningDHV Amsterdam office
Contact Amsterdam is an innovative building in Amsterdam. Originally a storage warehouse and garage, it has been re-purposed to create offices for Royal HaskoningDHV and a community of interdisciplinary creative individuals and businesses. Contact Amsterdam opened in 2017 and has quickly achieved landmark status for its sustainability and circularity and is helping fulfil the vision for Amsterdam to become the leading smart city of the future. We took the opportunity to create a new workplace that would meet our vision of what a perfect work environment should be – inspiring and sustainable, as well as enriching productivity, comfort and wellbeing for its users - and one that the community can share and benefit from.
Fitwel is one of the approaches that can help in creating buildings and spaces where people and businesses thrive. Currently, Royal HaskoningDHV is the only organisation in the Netherlands that provides guidance to other companies in the Fitwel Certification process.
