Although Immersed Tunnel has been built for the first time in 1893 in the United States, in Indonesia, Immersed Tunnel is viewed as a new technology. The country’s tunnels are more widely used for mining, defense purpose, and transportation.

Hediyanto Husaini, Chief of BP Konstruksi in "The Possibility for Application of Immersed Tunnel in Indonesia" Seminar held by Ministry of Public Works, BP Konstruksi, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherland, Royal HaskoningDHV and PT Bina Karya (Persero) stated, "the use of Immersed Tunnel could be the solution in addressing Indonesia's problem in infrastructure technology development. Although this technology is relatively expensive but it also comes with a lot of advantages, for instance, easy and low maintenance cost and smaller environmental footprint".
