On Wednesday 16 March 2016, Royal HaskoningDHV, ZJA Zwarts & Jansma Architects and Poly-Ned were awarded the Vernufteling Public Prize 2016 for the ‘Shaded Dome’.
The Vernufteling is the annual prize awarded by the Dutch engineering sector for the most innovative project, and comprises a jury prize and a public prize. The decision is determined by whether the project radiates ingenuity and is of social and economic importance.
The jury considered the Shaded Dome to be an innovative idea for creating temporary space for major sporting events, particularly in hot, tropical regions. It eliminates the need to construct a costly stadium for global events such as a world championship or the Olympic Games, which then becomes redundant when the event is over. The combination of an inflatable dome with a double-layered roof also enables heat from the sun to be extracted, which, coupled with cooling of the warm outside air, creates an acceptable interior climate.
The expert jury prize went to Witteveen+Bos for its Semi-Permeable Dam.
Rob Torsing (ZJA), Mart Hinssen (HaskoningDHV), Reinald Top (ZJA), Jos van de Loo (HaskoningDHV), Simon Visser and Edwin Molenaar (Poly-Ned).
