The government of the State of Pernambuco is being innovative, guaranteeing the universalisation of sewage collection and treatment from 14 municipalities in the metropolitan region of Recife and in Goiana. It is the largest public-private partnership in sanitation in Brazil. The first municipality in the State to have a universal sewage collection and treatment service is São Lourenço da Mata. Located in the metropolitan region of Recife, 18 km from the capital, it has approximately 100 thousand inhabitants. It was one of the cities chosen to host the 2014 World Cup. 200 km of collection networks will be installed, along with 8 pumping stations and 1 Nereda® sewage treatment plant in the municipality.
