About Nereda® wastewater treatment plant in Kloten, Switzerland
After a successful pilot Nereda technology has been selected by Abwasserreinigung Kloten Opfikon (AKO) for the upgrade of the wastewater treatments works of the municipality of Kloten - Opfikon in Switzerland. The current plant of Kloten, a municipality in the canton of Zürich, treats the wastewater for 65,000 person equivalents (p.e.). In view of increasing population and more stringent effluent requirement an upgrade to 95,000 p.e. is needed. Nereda can be retrofitted in the existing installation, nearly doubling its capacity in the same volume, which makes it an attractive solution.
The new Nereda installation in Kloten will be based on a 4 tank Nereda configuration. Construction starts in 2019; start-up is planned in stages between 2021 and 2024. It is the second Nereda of Wabag Water Technology in Switzerland, after Alpnach. Wabag signed a 10 year Cooperation Agreement with Royal HaskoningDHV in November 2014 to deliver Nereda to Switzerland.
From June 2014 to April 2015 Wabag and Royal HaskoningDHV successfully piloted the Nereda technology in Kloten (reactor volume 1.5 m3). “Its performance confirmed that the Nereda® technology is an excellent option for application at full scale, in terms of nutrients (ammonium, nitrogen, phosphorus) and solids removal. Moreover, Nereda could be retrofitted in the existing installation, which made it even more attractive to select the Nereda technology,” says Claudio Lehmann, process engineer of Wabag Switzerland.
