About the Nereda® WWTP in Radcliffe-on-Trent , UK
Radcliffe-on-Trent wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is situated South of the city of Nottingham, UK.The Challenge
Severn Trent Water needed to find a solution that would ensure the treated wastewater at Radcliffe-on-Trent WWTP complied with more stringent regulations and higher environmental standards. It also needed to find a cost-effective way to significantly upgrade to the plant and increase the treatment capacity to enable it to receive flows from another nearby sewage works.
The Solution
Severn Trent Water appointed North Midland Construction as the delivery partner on this £8 million upgrade project. The work at Radcliffe WWTP includes the construction of the three new Nereda reactors, each with a volume of 1,375m³. Once the Nereda plant is operational, the waste sludge will be thickened in buffer tanks, before polymer conditioning and thickening to 6% dry solids, which will then be tankered offsite. The site is due for operational start-up this year (2019) and when complete its peak flow will process 504 m³/hour.
The Outcome
The new Nereda installation at Radcliffe will ensure that discharged effluent meets the strict limits required for phosphorus and ammonia levels under Severn Trent’s permit agreement. This will deliver significant environmental benefits. In addition to its environmental credentials, Nereda also delivers in terms of cost, with relatively low capital expenditure required and low whole life costs, in comparison with other treatment solutions. Diana Miller, Severn Trent programme manager, said, “Installing Nereda will significantly improve the quality of effluent we put back into the water course.”
