An integrated approach to planning and economic-driven design expertise were two main themes covered by Radim Gill, Managing Director at Royal HaskoningDHV Czech Republic, in his recent role as key note speaker at a major planning conference.

‘Odborně o Brně’, a conference for local authorities and professionals in the Czech city of Brno, attracted a number of international investors from high end industries including Honeywell, IBM, ABB, AVG and Motorola. Its purpose was to address key issues in the planning process and procedures for the city of Brno and surrounding region of Southern Moravia.

Radim Gill said: “With metropolitan areas in Europe perceived globally as the main drivers of economic and social development, I was delighted to be invited to the conference which examined the potential for economic and social development in the area in and around Brno.

“It was a valuable opportunity to highlight the importance of linking strategy to physical plans and to share our approach and insights on how vital economic-driven design and evaluation of spatial plans are to the process.”

In 2013 a Strategy of Regional Development of the Czech Republic was approved by the Government for the purpose of efficient investment planning and EU sources allocation. The City of Brno and the wider conurbation is the third largest metropolitan area in the Czech Republic with more than 600,000 residents.

In recognition of the fact that Brno’s successful development depends primarily on close cooperation with the South Moravian Region and the City of Brno, the conference was designed primarily to highlight and discuss the challenges in the planning process for the Brno metropolitan area with all the authorities involved.

With an international track record in urban master planning and design, Royal HaskoningDHV took this opportunity to share new perspectives and illustrate how a collaborative and integrated approach in planning can enable a city to grow and flourish.

More than 110 delegates including representatives from municipal self-governments, planners and developers from the private sector attended the conference which was held at the Hotel Barceló. This included The Mayor of Brno who, at the end of event, gave a personal guarantee to continue the momentum gained at the conference into 2017.
