Principal Geotechnical Engineer

Principal Engineer will provide technical and management support as required. Focus on increasing our exposure to potential internal & external clients. 

General Responsibilities

Geotechnical advice:

  • Undertake geotechnical design and study work, as required on our projects
  • Write reports, specifications and to prepare drawings, as required
  • Operate and maintain geotechnical modelling software where appropriate
  • Assist with site investigation programme design and supervision
  • Assure the compliant delivery of services provided both internally and externally
  • Identify and progress evidenced solutions to geotechnical challenges encountered
  • Checking own work and work by others in accordance with the Quality Management System

Leadership and management

  •  Working with the geotechnical team to make the best use of shared resources and ensuring that an integrated approach to studies is carried out
  • Leadership of project teams on consulting assignments including project management, budgeting and quality control for consulting assignments
  • Manage geotechnical projects involving a variety of engineering disciplines and geotechnical investigations
  • Mentoring and training of staff where appropriate
  • Organising and directing junior staff or technicians, as necessary
  • Liaise with specialists from other disciplines and other RHDHV offices and build relationships within the company
  • Collaborate with project staff to ensure alignment with client needs
  • Develop and extend the technical capabilities of the geotechnical team
  • Provide contribution to strategic planning and business development of the geotechnical department

Network

  • Liaise with clients, both internally and externally for the purpose of providing geotechnical support and advice
  • This includes responding to and writing of expressions of interests, proposals, and other bids
  • Build and maintain client relationships with new and key clients thus developing new business opportunities
  • Advertising and publicising the work of the company through technical publications, participation in conferences and presentations

Profile

  •  Excellent communication skills; written and verbal
  • Strong emphasis on the importance of mentoring and developing staff
  • Passionate about geotechnical engineering, eager to make a long term commitment to a thriving business and seize the opportunity to make an impact at the highest level
  • Comfortable engaging with senior management / board level clients
  • Must be pro-active self-starter, able to manage own workload

Qualifications

  • Education, personal qualities, experience including special achievements, mobility Essential:
  • BSc in Civil Engineering with a specialism in geotechnical engineering 
  • Practical geotechnical design experience
  • Preparation and supervision of ground investigations
  • Proficient in geotechnical design software (such as Slope/W, Plaxis etc)
  • In-depth knowledge of the sector
  • Experience of geotechnical consultancy

Desirable:

  • PhD in relevant field
  • CEng, MICE or approaching this level

BIM (Building Information Modelling)
As Royal HaskoningDHV operate projects with a BIM approach, you are expected to be aware of the UK BIM framework (previously known as BIM Level 2), your role within it and ideally have practical experience.  If this is not the case, you will be expected to undertake the relevant training courses via our Digital Academy within your first 3 months of employment should you be successful.
