Royal HaskoningDHV are responsible for data collection, hydrodynamic and water quality modelling, geomorphological assessment and dredge material management on the Port of Hastings Development Project.

The Victorian Government established the Port of Hastings Development Authority in January 2012 to oversee the development of a second container port in the state. An expanded Port of Hastings will complement the Port of Melbourne and cater for growth of container movements in Victoria, generating job growth and other economic benefits.

The Victorian Government identified the Port of Hastings as a key area for expansion and committed $110 million to the Authority in April 2013 to progress staged port expansion planning. In May 2014 the development project was declared a ‘Major Transport Project’ under the Major Transport Projects Facilitation Act 2009. This Act establishes an integrated assessment and approvals process to improve timeliness of major transport project proposals while maintaining environmental and other standards.

Over the next three – four years, the Authority will undertake detailed environmental assessments and develop a business case. As a part of planning, specialists will consider options for new port infrastructure, including wharf facilities and a logistics precinct, with road and rail access to the port via an expanded Western Port Highway.
