This is terrific news for the team at NACO Netherlands Airport Consultants, a company of Royal HaskoningDHV, that was involved in all stages of the airport’s design as part of the team headed by Foster + Partners and FR-EE.
BIM Virtual Model Mexico Airport
At approximately 770,000 square meters, the Passenger Terminal Building at the new Mexico City International Airport is one of the world’s largest and most sustainable.It’s challenging design and ambitious sustainability goals led master architects Foster+Partners and FR-EE to select NACO as their design partner. Their selection was based on NACO’s expertise in the use of Building Information Management (BIM) to design and plan airport infrastructure and special airport systems.
The NACO team was responsible for the functional planning, IT and BHS model design for the new Passenger Terminal Building, as well as the Control Tower, Area Control Centre and the Ground Transportation Centre.
Overall, NACO created more than 50,000 virtual model elements for the project using BIM.The use of BIM was a key component to success in this ambitious project. Not only did it reduce the number of staff needed - it’s estimated that 1.5 times more staff would be needed to produce the same amount of drawings without BIM - it made it possible for everyone involved to easily access updated information, to simplify coordination across disciplines and to quickly identify issues.
This enabled a smooth and successful transition from concept to final design ensuring that the airport is both operationally efficient and will deliver a great passenger experience.Read the award announcement here.
