Heineken brewery, the Netherlands – 1953

Heineken Brewery, the Netherlands | 135 years Royal HaskoningDHVIn 1873, the Heineken beer brand was born. Just 11 years later, we received our first order from the company - the start of a long, international relationship which continues today. That first project was to design a boiler house and was followed with the appointment of one of our founders as consulting engineer to assist the company’s expansion. From the 1950s, we followed Heineken overseas as it set up plants in countries including Nigeria, Chad, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Zaire, Indonesia, Singapore and, more recently, in South Africa, Vietnam and Ethiopia. Today we are proud to assist Heineken in its long-term ambition to create sustainable businesses and generate positive impact beyond the gates of its breweries. The new Heineken Kilinto brewery in Ethiopia employs nearly 300 people and supplies the local market. By increasing the income of smallholder barley farmers and improving their access to markets, it is raising the prosperity of urban and agricultural communities.

Chemelot industrial park, the Netherlands

Chemelot Industrial Park, the Netherlands | 135 years Royal HaskoningDHVChemelot is the largest chemical industrial park in the Netherlands which is home to over 50 companies. Since 2006, we have managed the park’s assets which include roads, pipe racks, railway lines, bridges, sewer pipes and a harbour. We work closely with the site tenants such as Sitech and DSM to provide strategic asset management services to enable optimized performance and minimize risk and expenditure. In addition, we have initiated studies to explore Chemelot’s soil issues and boost groundwater monitoring, soil remediation, industrial landfill management and ground currents.

Our integrated approach for Chemelot extends to include leadership in health and safety and bespoke advice pertaining to the purchase, sale and lease of land. In 2015, we became one of the world’s first engineering consultancies to receive ISO 55001 certification for our strategic asset management consultancy services at Chemelot. This is a new global standard for asset management which takes into account lifecycle costing to accommodate sustainable long term planning to enhance profitability.

Morlais tidal energy, United Kingdom

Morlais Tidal Energy | 135 years Royal HaskoningDHVAn internationally significant development within the tidal sector is taking place off the island of Angelsey in Wales. The Morlais Tidal Energy Development Zone will allow developers to install arrays of tidal energy devices without the need to consent their own sites. Already 12 developers have bid for space within the zone, which will have a cumulative production capacity of 100 MW. We are leading the environmental impact assessment and providing consenting support for this high-profile project. Tidal power is a clean, sustainable and predictable source of energy and we have been involved with the development of the sector for more than a decade. Managed by a social enterprise, the Morlais project is also set to deliver real value to the local community.
