Committing to sustainability

We take responsibility for having a positive impact on the world and we constantly challenge ourselves and others to develop sustainable solutions to local and global issues. Acting with integrity and transparency, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of environmental and social governance. This is ingrained in how we collaborate with clients, partners and stakeholders as well as in our own operations – it is our purpose and strategic priority, Enhancing Society Together.
Our aim is to deliver measurable positive impact through our projects, and in our own operations, by addressing five Enhancing Society Together themes. These are the areas where we believe, as consultants, engineers, and project managers we can make the biggest difference in delivering benefits for people and planet. They are aligned with specific UN Sustainable Development Goals.

We are tracking our progress on each theme which can be seen through the blue outlined area at the heart of our Purpose Chart (April 2023).

In pursuit of driving more sustainable projects, we launched our Purpose Matrix to guide conversations, decision-making and our approach to project delivery. The matrix is a reference to simply consider the impact of a project against each theme.

Clearly and transparently demonstrating where we are delivering positive impact – whether in relative or increasingly in absolute terms – is key to supporting delivery of our purpose.

Our commitment to sustainability stems from our founders who in 1881 started our company from a shared passion for the profession of engineering, an indestructible belief in progress and the drive to make the world a better place.

In 2008 we were proud to join the United Nations Global Compact and officialise our commitment to corporate sustainability and operate in ways that meet fundamental responsibilities in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption. By incorporating their Ten Principles into our policies and operation, and establishing a culture of integrity, we aim for sustainable success. Our yearly progress reports can be found on our company page on UNGC’s website.

We also participate in a number of international bodies at advisory and committee level. An overview of these partnerships and memberships can be found here.
